- Jun 23, 2012 I recently found that the Mac arabic keyboard layouts available online didn't work on my computer. I happen to work with a macbook pro with windows installed as a second OS option. I wanted to use the Arabic language for writing my files, and then i discovered that the arabic mapping was different.
Adding the keyboard is quite straight forward however displaying the virtual Arabic keyboard can be difficult to find. Although adding the Arabic keyboard is useful for when you want to type in Arabic, if you don’t have an external keyboard, then you may wish to open a virtual keyboard.
You can alternatively, buy an Arabic keyboard layer to help you.

These instructions were made from Mac OS 10.10 Yosemite however they apply to most previous versions as well.
Adding the Arabic Keyboard
1. Open System Preferences
2. Select Keyboard
3. Select the tab “Input sources”.
4. Add the Arabic keyboard. Press Ok.
If you want to switch between the keyboard quite regularly, make sure you select “Show Input menu in the menu bar”. You will then be able to see your language flag next to the time or battery power. Click on the flag and you will see the keyboards you can use.

How to display the virtual Arabic keyboard on Mac
1. Go back to System settings > Keyboard and select the tab “Keyboard” (this is the first and default tab).
2. Select “Show keyboard & Character viewers in menu bar”
3. You will then be able to open the menu next to the battery power
The virtual Arabic keyboard will look like this:
You can click each letter with the mouse and the letter will automatically display in the text field. You could also learn to touch type in Arabic and then eventually you won’t need the virtual Arabic keyboard.
