Steps to installing and using the GlobalProtect VPN Client for the SOE Departmental VPN:

  • Checking if you already have GlobalProtect:
    • To figure out if you already have the Palo Alto GlobalProtect client already installed you can go into your applications folder and search for GlobalProtect.

  • Installation:

    • 1.) In a browser, (safari, firefox or chrome are suggested), navigate to https://soe.vpn.wisc.edu/ and sign in with your SOE credentials. If you need assistance with your SOE credentials please call the MERIT Help Desk at 608 265-4773.
      2.) After logging in, click on “Download Mac 32/64 bit GlobalProtect agent”. This will download a Installer Package. Open this file from your designated downloads folder or from the browser's downloads.
      3.) After clicking on the installer file from your downloads, follow the prompts clicking continue, install, and then close at the end. During installation it will prompt for administrator credentials.


  • First Time Setup:

    • 4.) Once installed, there will be a faded globe icon in your menu bar, by the time. When you click on the icon it will pop up with a window to enter a portal address. Enter soe.vpn.wisc.edu as seen below.

      5.) After clicking connect it will bring you to a log in window. Here you can enter your SOE credentials. If you need assistance with your SOE credentials please call the MERIT Help Desk at 608 265-4773.

      If you run into the problem where it is stuck Connecting or Still Working... please follow these directions: Click on the apple in the top left and choose 'System Preferences'. Then open 'Security & Privacy'. Under the 'General' tab, in the bottom half there should be a line saying that Palo Alto has been blocked from running. Click allow by that and try connecting again.


      After signing in you will see the connected window and the icon on the menu bar will be darker and look like this: .



  • Connecting and Disconnecting:
    • After following steps 1 through 5 the first time you use GlobalProtect on your machine, you can use the following directions to disconnect and connect from then on.


      Connecting:


      To connect click on the icon from the menu bar and click connect. Then log in with your SOE credentials.


      Older Version:


      If you have an older version of GlobalProtect you may need to follow the two pictures on the right instead. You will need to right click on the icon in the menu bar, click connect and enter your SoE credentials. Once you log in to the older version, it will prompt you to update. Click yes and update.


      Disconnecting:


      To disconnect from the VPN you can click on the icon in the menu bar and click disconnect.


      Older version:


      If you have an older version of GlobalProtect you may need to follow the two pictures on the right instead. You will need to right click on the icon in the menu bar and click disconnect.

Symptom

> New GlobalProtect deployment
> GlobalProtect connectivity works fine from Windows
> Issue is seen only on macOS
> GlobalProtect Agent stuck at connecting stage on macOS with following message:
**Some components of the GlobalProtect app could not be launched due to your operating system settings. This may cause some network traffic to be blocked. Please contact your IT administrator for assistance**

Environment
GlobalProtect Client
macOS 10.13 and later

Cause
According to Technical Note TN2459 from Apple, 'macOS High Sierra 10.13 introduces a new feature that requires user approval before loading newly-installed third-party kernel extensions (KEXTs).' Additionally, Technical Note TN2459 from Apple indicates, '[t]his feature enforces that only kernel extensions approved by the user will be loaded on a system.'
When a request is made to load a KEXT that the user has not yet approved, the load request is denied and macOS presents the alert with a System Extension Blocked message.

ResolutionPaloalto Globalprotect Vpn Client Download Mac
Enable Palo Alto Networks as a trusted developer.
  1. From your Mac endpoint, launch System Preferences
  2. Open the Security & Privacy preferences and then select General
  3. Click the lock icon on the bottom left of the window to make changes and modify preferences
  4. When prompted, enter your Mac User Name and Password and then Unlock the preferences
  5. Click 'Allow' next to the message 'System software from developer 'Palo Alto Networks' was blocked from loading.'
